Mobile 3D Foot Scanning from a Smartphone
Volumental mobile scanning turns a shopper's smartphone camera into a 3D foot measurement device. It runs in the mobile browser, with no app download. A shopper takes a few photos of their feet, standing next to a common household object for scale, and receives accurate foot measurements in about 2 to 3 minutes. Depending on the merchant's setup, those measurements can also support a size recommendation and a reusable fit profile. Mobile and in-store scanners use different capture methods, but both produce measured 3D foot data for Volumental's fit layer. More than 85 million feet have been scanned with Volumental technology across over 3,000 stores.
How accurate is mobile foot scanning?
We publish how we validate mobile foot measurements. In our internal validation on barefoot adults, median absolute error was 1.1 millimetres for foot length and 1.3 millimetres for ball width. Nine in ten scans were within 3.2 millimetres for length and 3.5 millimetres for ball width of our in-store scanner, which is separately validated against caliper measurements. In a separate repeated-scan study on barefoot adults, foot-length repeatability was 1.1 millimetres, comparable with 1.3 millimetres for trained-human digital caliper measurements. These figures describe measurement performance; recommendation quality also depends on the shoe-fit data connected to the measurement. (Internal validation, revalidated September 2026.)
How do we measure accuracy?
Many sizing tools estimate size from quiz answers or purchase history without measuring the foot directly. We validate mobile scanning three ways:
- In-store scanner reference. Mobile measurements are compared with Volumental's in-store 3D foot scanner, which is separately validated against caliper measurements.
- Repeated-scan repeatability. The same foot is scanned multiple times to quantify measurement consistency.
- Trained-human comparison. A separate barefoot-adult study compares foot-length repeatability with trained-human digital caliper measurements.
Capture conditions vary across phone cameras, lighting and how a shopper stands, so we test continuously across devices.
How easy is it for shoppers?
In the 30 days ending August 31, 2026, 95% of shoppers who submitted a post-scan rating gave 4 or 5 stars (2,563 of 2,698 ratings). Completed mobile scans took a median of 2 minutes 41 seconds across 14,259 completed sessions. The scan runs in the browser, with nothing to install. Every completed scan gives the shopper measured foot data; when a merchant connects that data to its shoe-fit information, it can also support a size recommendation and reusable fit profile.
Measurement first, recommendation second
Mobile scanning does two distinct jobs, and it helps to keep them separate:
- Measurement: a 3D model of the foot with length, width and more, captured from photos.
- Recommendation: that measurement matched against each shoe's own fit characteristics to recommend a size.
Tools that skip the first step have a hard ceiling on the second. A quiz can only be as accurate as the shopper's memory of their last shoe. A measurement is as accurate as the scan, which is why we invest in validating it.
How does mobile scanning compare to other sizing approaches?
Inference-based sizing tools (size quizzes and purchase-history models) estimate a size without measuring the foot directly. Their result depends on the quality of those inputs.
